Short film/genre research: lights out

Common Sound in the Thriller Genre: "Lights Out" implements a common thriller sound strategy by making use of intense and minimalist soundtracks. The film  uses silence as a tool to build tension and then shocks the audience with sudden and impactful sounds. The sound design plays a crucial role in creating a suspenseful atmosphere. This effect keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

Common Mis-En-Scene  in the Thriller Genre:

  • Lighting: The film heavily relies on lighting to enhance the suspense. It cleverly uses low-key lighting, playing with shadows and darkness to create a sense of unease. The contrast between light and dark is a pivotal element in amplifying the thriller atmosphere.

  • Set Design: The setting is confined, predominantly taking place in a house. The filmmakers utilize everyday locations, turning them into ominous spaces to intensify the psychological impact on the audience. These locations are extremely accessible for my group and we will probably do a majority of our short film in a house

Common Editing in the Thriller Genre: The editing in "Lights Out" contributes significantly to the genre's conventions. The film employs quick cuts and dynamic editing to fully bring out the unpredictable aspects. There are some thrillers however that take a slower paced approach to continuously build suspense which me and my group plan on doing.

Elements of the Genre That I Like:

  • Creating Suspense in Short Timeframes: The challenge of building suspense effectively within a limited runtime is intriguing.

  • Innovative Storytelling Techniques: Thriller short films often experiment with unique narrative structures, providing a fresh perspective on the genre.

  • Captivating the Audience Quickly: The ability to grab the audience's attention effectively
and importantly maintain it throughout the short duration.

Elements of the Genre That Do Not Appeal to Me:

  • Rushed Resolutions: Some thrillers feel “rushed” by producers leading to the plot ending in a unsatisfying way leaving us audience members disappointed. To avoid this we plan on not building too much on small aspects of the film and keeping one common goal through out our short film

Overused Clichés: If a short thriller relies heavily on predictable tropes without introducing innovative elements the quality of the film takes a huge hit.
