Movie conventions research: After
Welcome back, we have briefly looked at the conventions of the movie “After” and how they connect to the romance genre to incorporate with our film. This movie brings 2 characters together that eventually fall in love, which is a big part of what we want to do with our film. Our film is going to be more of a friends to lovers, which in that case a lot of differences and problems can be faced. The 2 main characters in this movie had this exact problem causing a lot of conflict in their relationship. Overall, the movie of course, ends happily ever after, just how any other romantic movie usually does. A couple things we liked about the movie were the chemistry between the 2 main characters. The chemistry shown is a really big part of a real relationship and we liked how much it emphasized the importance of keeping the chemistry up. You need to work together with your partner to keep the relationship. Not only did we like the chemistry, but also how realistic it seemed with the problems shown between the 2. It makes a big difference, especially when ups and downs are involved. Real relationships are not all fairytales and rainbows all the time. A honeymoon phase in the beginning is usually always the case. However, it tends to get hard sometimes, but it is important to remember that it will be you and your partner against the problem. This idea is well represented in this movie. We also really liked how the movie grasped upon some big themes that go for the real world. Trust, communication, and boundaries were focused on a lot throughout the movie. This helped portray that these are things to be spoken about in a relationship and keep each other aware so they can be on the same page. Something we did not like about the movie is how overdramatic it got at certain points. It made it harder to take some of the parts seriously because it just became a little realistic at some points. One more thing that did not appeal to us was that it was based off common cliches that you can see in any other romantic movie. For example, the bad boy with a troubled past and the innocent girl that fell so hard for him. This is something you often see in these types of movies, but for us we would like to change it up and make it unique to the audience. All-inclusively, the movie “After” was a great reference for us to be able to get a view of things we want to incorporate in our film.
